Karen Van Lengen, FAIA, Kenan Professor of Architecture, and former Dean of the School of Architecture is doing pioneering digital humanities work at the intersection of architecture, art, and music (“Soundscape”). Her talk, entitled Give Me 4’33” and I’ll Give You the World, echoes composer John Cage, whose work often structured silence, heightening audience awareness of the ambient soundscape. What sounds do our iconic buildings and other special spaces—like UVA’s Lawn and “academical village”–make?
