Learn MoreThe Academy sponsors or endorses a variety of programs and activities each year. Members are invited to engage in these events as presenters/facilitators and participants. Academy members are also encouraged to spread the word about these programs in support of the Academy’s mission of building an inclusive learning community.

Research Grant and Scholarly Fellowship
Educational research and scholarly innovation are significant components of the education mission of the University of Virginia School of Medicine. To further scholarly work in these areas, the Center for Medical Education Research and Scholarly Innovation and the Academy for Excellence in Education send an annual Call for Letters of Intent for two distinct awards: (1) Educational Research Grant and (2) Fellowship for Scholarly Innovation in Medical/Biomedical Sciences Education
These awards support faculty in the NxGen, BIMS, and public health educational programs to: conduct rigorous educational research (1) or develop, implement and evaluate projects that involve new educational approaches or novel applications of established approaches (2).

Committees

Faculty and trainees can get involved in leading the Academy by serving on one of five committees: Educational Scholarship, Teaching, Membership, Educator Advancement, and Innovation. Each committee consists of a two co-chairs and at-large members. Committee service will initially be either 2 or 3 year terms, thereby staggering term expiration dates for committee members. The terms for the chair and vice chair will alternate to allow for continuity in the leadership of each committee. Academy members sign up for committees in which they have interest, however the election of committee chairs and vice-chairs will occur within each committee.

The Educational Scholarship Committee is charged with the promotion of dissemination of educational scholarship across the School of Medicine.
The Teaching Committee is charged with advancing teaching expertise among faculty in the School of Medicine.
The Membership Committee is charged with the recruitment and support of Members of the Academy.
The Advancement Committee is charged with promoting educators in their career development.
The Innovation Committee is charged with incorporating innovative practices to advance the educational enterprise.
Awards
Academy members may be nominated for SOM Dean’s Office teaching awards. Information about each award, including a list of past winners, is available here.
