Tenure

While the value of tenure in academic medicine is a subject of debate at institutions across the country, tenure remains a component of the academic advancement process at the University of Virginia School of Medicine (SOM). One question the committee considered was the ‘value’ of tenure and exactly what tenure confers. This, too, is debated among AAMC member institutions with the sense at many institutions that the meaning of tenure is moving towards a guarantee of title, but there is great variation in meaning beyond the designation of title without term.
